In recent weeks, the Mount Vernon Police Department has noted an uptick in reports of thefts from vehicles, prompting an investigation, Mayor Andre Wallace said. In several videos shared from Ring devices, it appeared that the same person was suspected of checking car doors and entering parked vehicles.
As a result of this feedback, additional officers were deployed to strategic locations around the city in an attempt to locate a suspect.
In the early hours of Wednesday, Oct .16, with the assistance of the “Neighbors” smartphone app from ring.com, officers were notified of an attempted theft near the intersection of Beekman Avenue and South Columbus Avenue.
Officers responded to the scene and arrested Mount Vernon resident Dozzia Mantock, 24, who was arrested and charged with petit larceny for multiple larcenies from vehicles throughout the city.
“We want to thank our citizens for their engagement and feedback using the ‘Neighbors’ app, the Nextdoor app and other social media platforms regarding criminal activity in our community,” Wallace said. “Their heightened awareness has brought another criminal off the streets and has made the city just a little safer.“
Mount Vernon Police Commissioner Shawn Harris added, “utilizing the Neighbors App has helped us identify persons who engage in criminal activity from car break-ins to burglaries. The goal of the Police Department is to implement crime reduction strategies that will deter crime and solve crimes quicker while providing a safer city for all who live, work, play and pray in Mount Vernon”
